Below you can see an example of a Digital Download Blueprint.

Our digital downloads are designed to be as user-friendly as possible. We use 1-foot grid lines and include a helpful ruler so you can easily convert measurements when setting up your bed.

As with all of our products, we are focused on making Professional Design so easy even a beginner can do it.

Some companies only provide CAD layouts that require special software or difficult-to-measure 2D blueprints. We simplified this process by creating an easy-to-follow guide with special instructions.

But remember, if you don’t know which way to go, the printed Garden Maps can be installed up to 70% faster than measuring everything out by hand!

Hot summers are no match for these sun lovers. This easy-to-grow beautiful garden truly shines on days many landscape plants are looking wilted and thirsty. The deep red shades of the ninebark and weigela create a stunning backdrop to the soft blues of juniper and Russian sage and the vibrant yellow of daylily and blackeyed susan. Color begins early in this garden but lasts throughout even the hottest days of August and September.

This plant mix is appropriate for part- to full-sun conditions and the species are generally hardy to a wide range of conditions in USDA cold hardiness zones 5-8. Install in the spring or fall when temperatures are moderate and rain is more frequent. Although the plants were selected for hardiness in a wide range of temperatures and soil types, watering, fertilizing, and pest management, particularly during the establishment period, will be crucial to their success.

Prepare the planting bed by completely removing turfgrass or other existing plant materials, debris, aggregate, and rubbish from the area to expose soil below. A soils test from a local university extension will indicate if the soil should be amended for planting. Consult a landscape contractor for recommendations or assistance if necessary. Unroll the fabric with printed side up, placing it, in general, with taller plants to the north. Cut an ‘X’ at each numbered circle, making sure to set each plant near its designated spot after each cut. Using a shovel or garden auger, dig deep enough to place the plant’s root ball plumb on the subgrade below, ensuring that shrubs’ and trees’ root flares will be one inch above the finished grade. Dig wide enough to accommodate the root ball, a bio-tone amendment, and native soil for best establishment. Rough up the plant’s root ball by hand or with a knife and place in planting pit. Refill with soil and bio-tone around the plant.

Once all the plants have been planted, top fabric with a two- to three-inch cover of an organic mulch material such as double shredded hardwood bark to retain moisture and protect plants’ roots. Select a deep color such as black or dark brown for best contrast with the plant material.

Worried you won’t find the plants you need?

Making substitutions is now easier than ever with our in-store shopping cards!

The card contains a map with numbered locations and the plant recommended to fill each location. For each recommended plant, we have noted its type and mature spread.

You cannot find one of the recommended plants? Replace it with a plant of the same type and mature spread.

If you decide to replace any of the plants, write down the name of the replacement plant in the empty slot on the card for future reference.

FAQs

What do I get with a digital blueprint?

A digital blueprint is the layout in a .PDF format. If you are comfortable reading a scaled schematic and think you can handle the installation without the extra help, this option may be for you.

When I order a Garden Map, what do I get?

Garden Map is the design layout printed on our custom-made landscape fabric. Along with the printed fabric, you will receive installation instructions.

  • If you order a design from our Limited Collection and choose the option “Garden Map + Plants”, you will receive plants with your order. If you choose the option “Garden Map only”, you will receive the design printed on landscaping fabric, but no plants.
  • If you order a design from our Ready Made or Modular collections, you will only receive the design printed on landscaping fabric. These two collections do not include plants; however, you will receive a plant shopping card to help you find everything you need in the closest plant nursery or garden center.
Is this just a digital download of a landscape design template?

If you checked the “Digital Blueprint Only” box, then yes. If not, you will receive our actual Garden map, printed on our custom-made landscape fabric.

Should I start with seeds or plants?

Whether you should start your garden with seeds or mature plants depends on several factors, including your gardening goals, experience level, budget, and patience. If you have the option, we recommend you start with mature plants for several reasons:

  • Instant garden: When you start with mature plants, your garden looks established and full right from the beginning. If you’re planting trees or shrubs for shade or privacy, starting with mature plants can provide instant results.
  • Faster results: Mature plants typically produce flowers, fruits, or vegetables sooner than plants grown from seeds.
  • Less effort: Adult plants need less maintenance than seedlings. Additionally, starting from seeds often requires setting up indoor growing spaces with appropriate lighting, temperature control, and ventilation.
Are plants included?
  • If you order a design from our Limited Collection and choose the option “Garden Map + Plants”, you will receive plants with your order. If you choose the option “Garden Map only”, you will receive the design printed on landscaping fabric, but no plants.
  • If you order a design from our Ready Made or Modular collections, you will only receive the design printed on landscaping fabric. These two collections do not include plants; however, you will receive a plant shopping card to help you find everything you need in the closest plant nursery or garden center.
Is it possible to order just one or several plants included in a design?

We bundle plants to provide the best pricing possible, as well as to streamline shipping. Shipping live plants is expensive! This is why, for our Spring collection, all of the plants can only be sold as a package and can not be broken up.
